Studying Michael Jackson’s Blackness: Appreciating Afrocentricity

By Elizabeth Amisu
Dear Friend,
There has never been a time when ethnicity wasn’t political, wasn’t radical, wasn’t topical. Michael Jackson’s unique experience as one of the most visible black artists in the world, collided spectacularly with his skin condition, vitiligo, and created a perfect storm for misrepresentation and misinterpretation. However, as we unpick the various themes and strands, we can learn so much more about what ethnicity means in the modern world. Michael Jackson’s ethnicity becomes a conduit, a prism through which we all see.
