The Subic rape case was a controversial and sensitive case that had major implications in Philippine law and diplomacy. At its center was the accusation by a Filipina that a US Marine raped her in November 2005. After the American was found guilty, however, the Filipina—known publicly as "Nicole"—suddenly withdrew her accusation and went to live in the United States. There was a lot of speculation that "Nicole" was bribed, which was thought to be the reason the case was later overturned.
