Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)

Lesson Text

7 You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
1 Peter 3:7 (NASB)

The Message for Husbands:

As wives are called to submit to their husbands, husbands are called to SUBMIT their wives for the same purpose: God’s glory.
SUBMISSION to one’s spouse is done on the Lord’s behalf with the goal of being a kingdom focused marriage.
In submitting himself to sacrificially love his wife as Christ loves the church, the husband creates an environment conducive to her GROWTH in the Lord.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. 28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 33 Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband. Ephesians 5:25–28, 33 (NASB)

To love his wife in this way (i.e. Christ’s love) the husband must: Know his wife INTIMATELY and lead her being mindful of her UNIQUENESS.

19 Husbands, love your wives [be affectionate and sympathetic with them] and do not be harsh or bitter or resentful toward them.
Colossians 3:19 (AMP)

Show her the honor and respect she deserves as a DAUGHTER of GOD.

6 Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.
Colossians 4:6 (NASB)

Key message for husbands:

God is so concerned that you treat your wife with loving concern that He is willing to INTERRUPT His RELATIONSHIP with you until you do so.

13 And this second thing you do. You cover the Lord’s altar with tears, with weeping and groaning because he no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. 14 But you say, “Why does he not?” Because the Lord was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. 15 Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? And what was the one God seeking? Godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth.

Malachi 2:13–15 (ESV)
