Sermon Notes—“Overcomers - Submission In The Workplace”

October 11, 2015
KLC 2015 Theme: Seeking His Kingdom “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)

Lesson Text

18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable. 19 For this finds favor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God. 21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps
1 Peter 2:18–21a (NASB)

Be submissive = Greek hupotasso, a military expression meaning “to arrange in formation under the commander.”

Slaves were to obey their masters, whether they were kind or unreasonable.

1 Let all who are under a yoke as bondservants regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled. 2 Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these things.
1 Timothy 6:1–2 (ESV)

If God commanded slaves to submit to their masters, what excuse do we have for not submitting to MANAGEMENT?

22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. Serve them sincerely because of your reverent fear of the Lord. Colossians 3:22 (NLT)
We submit to management on God’s behalf but we work GOD, not for MAN.

The workplace is a MICROCOSM of the world.

The root of much of our workplace discontent is UNMET, unrealistic EXPECTATIONS.
17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field.
Genesis 3:17–18 (ESV)

5 “If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses? If you stumble in safe country, how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan? Jeremiah 12:5 (NIV)

Accepting the call to be a Christian is to accept a call to SUFFER like He did. You are called by God to be JESUS on your job.

23 Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 24 Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.
Colossians 3:23–24 (NLT)

A difficult job is an opportunity to receive greater FAVOR from God.
