This episode covers a deep fear that emergency workers carry. We want to feel that we are trained and prepared to handle anything. It is soothing to pretend that every skill and ability we have harnessed will carry us through any challenge we are met with. The truth is that we can be faced with situations where our training or skills may not be able to overcome the adversity at hand. What we CAN control is working on our self-awareness, communication with peers, doing our best self-care, and maintaining skills/knowledge as updated as possible. Then when a situation does not go well, it is easier to recognize the other factors that we could not control.

Not being at our best is a sign of not having our needs met...not a sign that we are incapable. Find out what your best physical, mental, social, and emotional self-care routines are to meet your needs; being ready to be at your most optimal to roll with the energy and use your expertise to the best of your ability. Remember! Our knowledge and skills are only as effective as their limitations allow. If you feel a situation did not go well and you are ruminating about it, reach out to a peer or professional you trust to talk about it.

This podcast covers many topics considered “taboo” or difficult for some individuals. We do not condone any illegal activities, as this is a platform for harm reduction and open dialogue.
