Peter uses a term in this passage that is translated in the KJV as "peculiar." V 9 says: You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people. In the NIV is it translated, "Unique." In other words-different:

. Different because we belong to Him.

. Different in order to make a difference in the world.
