Suffering and Evil

Listen Later

Has a friend ever asked you, “If God is so good, then why does He allow pain and suffering?” If we’re really honest, I think we all struggle to fully understand this dilemma. For example, it’s difficult to watch the painful death of a loved one from cancer or some other unforgiving disease. And who isn’t upset when terrorism takes innocent lives? I’ve written a book on this subject:  “Where is God when Bad Things Happen?”

If your friend brings up this problem of pain, take time to pray. Then, give an answer using these three key points: First, God is sovereign. But, He also gives people the freedom to follow Him or disobey Him. People often choose to do evil deeds. God does not approve of these actions. The Bible says Jesus will return one day to judge the earth. He will bring justice against all wickedness at the appointed time. But, He will also display great mercy. He will forgive all who have put their faith in Jesus Christ, who paid the penalty for our evil deeds.

Second, when your friend is questioning why bad things happen, tell him that Jesus understands suffering. Even though He was innocent, Jesus willingly accepted being tortured and killed, crucified. So, He can sympathize with our pain. Finally, number 3, even though we may not understand it all, Romans 8:28 says God works all things for our good. Comfort your friends with these words as you pray with them and point them to Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.
