Suffolk County Proposal Two- A Resolution
Voters will decide whether to increase the term lengths for Suffolk County legislators from two years to four years, eliminating the need for three elections in four years. The Republican-led legislature passed the Term Limit Preservation Act earlier this year in response to the state shifting local elections to even-numbered years.A “YES” vote allows winners in November’s race to begin serving four-year terms and face reelection in 2028.A “NO” vote will require legislators to seek office again in 2026 and 2028.New York State Proposition Proposal One, An Amendment
The proposal would amend the state Constitution to allow new Nordic ski and biathlon trails in the Adirondack forest preserve. Development in the preserve requires constitutional permission. The trails would be part of the Olympic sports complex in North Elba, Essex County. The project would involve up to 323 acres, and the state would buy 2,500 acres of land to add to the preserve as an offset. The New York State Legislature must approve the offset.A “YES” vote will allow new trails in the Adirondack forest preserve and the purchase of acreage to expand the preserve.A “NO” vote will prevent any development or expansion.***
The New York State Department of Transportation says that the westbound Sunrise Highway near the Shinnecock Canal Bridge in Hampton Bays will continue to be restricted to one lane of traffic using the roadway shoulder through the rest of this week as crews make repairs to the abutment where the roadway crosses the Shinnecock Canal. Consequently, westbound traffic on 27 and 27A from sunset until almost 8 o’clock last night was nearly at a standstill between Water Mill and downtown Hampton Bays, causing motorists over an hour to just drive through Southampton Village. As quoted on 27east.com, “The New York State Department of Transportation understands the importance of Sunrise Highway to South Fork residents and is expediting repairs to the Shinnecock Canal Bridge … which suffered significant scour and erosion to the bridge’s abutment during Thursday night’s heavy rains,” DoT spokesman Stephen Canzoneri said. “Repairs began on Saturday morning and are expected to last approximately one week. In the meantime, westbound traffic on Sunrise Highway will be reduced to one lane in the vicinity of the bridge and shifted to the left shoulder.”

The villages of East Hampton and Southampton are urging commuters to use the Long Island Rail Road’s South Fork Commuter Connection if possible this week to avoid the backlog of traffic caused by the storm damage to the Sunrise Highway Bridge over the Shinnecock Canal. Beth Young reports in EAST END BEACON that repairs at that site in Hampton Bays are expected to last through the week, with traffic on 27 westbound limited to one lane by the Shinnecock Canal Bridge. Commuter Connection trains serve stations on the Montauk Line from Speonk to Montauk and cost $3.25, which includes a local shuttle in the villages.

Some doctors and hospitals are refusing to treat many Medicare and Medicaid patients via telehealth, or is charging them large fees, because the federal government shutdown is preventing reimbursement of such services. David Olson reports in NEWSDAY that a rule adopted during the early part of COVID-19 pandemic greatly expanded telehealth coverage, but the rule was not extended by Oct. 1, when the current shutdown began. Certain types of Medicare and Medicaid plans continue to offer telehealth coverage, but health care providers risk not getting reimbursed if they have a telehealth appointment under a non-covered plan.
Limiting access to telehealth could lead to more serious complications for patients, and hospitalizations, said Dr. David Jakubowicz, president of the Medical Society of the State of New York, which represents physicians statewide.
"It’s another barrier to care," he said.
Some doctors are canceling telehealth appointments or charging patients, depending on what type of Medicare or Medicaid plan they have, Jakubowicz said.
"If a physician is not sure they're going to get paid for something or paid promptly for it, they may not elect to do those services," he said. "In order to pay your employees, you need a certain amount of revenue coming in."
Yet medical reimbursement continues for some insurance plans, said Wendy Darwell, president and CEO of the Suburban Hospital Alliance of New York State, which represents hospitals on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley.
About half of Medicare enrollees have insurance coverage via private companies, and many of those plans continue to cover telehealth, she said.
Regarding the tele-visit issue Stony Brook Medicine said, "Telehealth has expanded access and supported countless families, and we strongly advocate for its swift restoration. In the meantime, our teams remain dedicated to providing seamless, high-quality care through in-person visits and community-based health care settings."
