Soliman Abdel Rahman Soliman, infamously nicknamed the “Matareya Butcher,” was one of Egypt’s most feared serial killers of the 1980s. Over the course of his crimes, he murdered 29 people—mostly poor and vulnerable men—by strangling them after luring them in while posing as an informant. His killings baffled investigators, as they found no clear motive and noted his unsettling habit of removing his victims’ lower clothing without committing sexual assault. For years, police struggled to track him down, hindered by his careful methods and choice of marginalized victims. His reign of terror ended only when one victim managed to escape and provide a crucial testimony. That account led to his arrest, trial, and eventual execution in 1988.
