The characters are in the city of Neverwinter when their dwarf patron and friend, Gundren Rockseeker, hires them to escort a wagon to Phandalin. Gundren has gone ahead with a warrior, Sildar Hallwinter, to attend to business in the town while the characters follow with the supplies. - The Lost Mine of Phandelver, p. 4.

After spending the majority of the day headed south on The High Road from the city of Neverwinter, the group approaches the intersection to Triboar Trail. Upon heading East along the trail, Flik Nicklewatt attempts to get a better vantage point on a potential ambush that killed both Gundren and Sildar's horses. However, Flik slipped off the hillside, tumbling into the horse carcasses, alerting four goblins.

The four goblins were easily taken care of, and the group is torn on where to go next. Do they travel further along Triboar Trail to the town of Phandalin, or do they follow the goblin trail in search of the missing horse riders, Gundren and Sildar? Before deciding, the group decides to attempt lockpicking the wagonload to see what is inside. After a mysterious ward glows, tipping one of the party members to its sensivity, Ash-a-tron suggests moving on from the curiosity, and the group travels north in search of their quest giver.

Upon reaching the mouth of a mysterious cavern system, Maven discovers a goblin outpost east of a river coming out of the cave. After quick dispatch of the two goblins, the group finds themselves ready to enter the cave and face whatever comes their way…
