At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier | Summary & Analysis
Preview:
At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier tells the story of the Goodenough family. The year is 1838, and James and Sadie Goodenough are fighting about apple trees again. The couple has lived for nine years in Ohio's Black Swamp, a dank, moldy, muddy place where it's difficult to farm and live. When the two arrived from Connecticut, they had to build a cabin and clear the entire plot.
James and Sadie are struggling. Their closest neighbors are miles away. They are in debt. They no longer feel tenderly towards each other. Almost every year they have lost a child to swamp fever, an illness caused by mosquitoes. Only five of their 10 children remain: Robert, Martha, Sal, Caleb, and Nathan.
The couple is fighting because James wants to graft 10 "spitter" trees into "eater" trees, to produce apples for eating rather than for making applejack spirits...

History through the leaves of one family tree
At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier is a story of the Goodenough family, Connecticut transplants to Ohioâs Black Swamp. The husband and wife argue over their apple trees. He wants to graft them to increase the production of edible fruit, while she wants to keep what they have to make more Apple Jack for her own consumption. In the midst of this, their surviving children grow up with little in the way of familial attention, and except for son, Robert, with little in the way of interests. Robert, though, has inherited his fatherâs love of trees, which serves as a thread throughout the story.
Summary of At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier by Instaread is an excellent analysis of this novel about a dysfunctional family in America of the 1830s and 40s, the time of Manifest Destiny and Americaâs march to the Pacific. An excellent overview of the history and culture of the country told through the experiences of one family.
Like most Instaread summaries, this one gives a good peek inside the book before you have to make the full investment.
