A personal look at a tragic chapter in China's history
In the 1980s, the Peopleâs Republic of China embarked on a one-child-per-family policy that was enforced through some draconian and often inhumane ways. In her book One Child, author Mei Fong gives a highly personal account of the history, implementation, and future implications of this policy, including the fact that, while China was not the only country to have such a policy, it implemented it in a uniquely harsh way, and is now paying the price for its short sightedness. Neighboring countries, from which women are often lured or kidnapped to become wives of the surplus of males that resulted from the policy, are also suffering; as are many married couples in China, who now have to care for two sets of aging parents as well as their one child because of the lack of siblings.
Summary of One Child by Mei Fong by Instaread gives a sneak peek inside the book, with a detailed analysis of the main points, and is highly recommended if you wish to know more about a book before you make a purchase decision.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.
China's future generation
With all the talk about China in the news, its easy to become curious. It seems that their economy is a constant source of debate, but their skewed perspective on human rights is also intriguing. "One Child" provides a compelling personal and journalistic examination of China's infamous one-child policy. Tracing the policy back to its inception, "One Child" illuminates the myriad impacts it has had on Chinese society, as well as the dangerous implications it has for the future of the nation.
This Instaread review distills this journalistic non-fiction book into 9 key takeaways that range from the propaganda behind the one-child policy to the economic effects it has had. The Chinese education and culture sets up many of these only children for trouble in marriage, and has created a horde of unmarried millennial men. Another gem Instaread analyzes and expounds upon is the impact that growing up without siblings has had on Chinese adults. Some lessons are best taught in the family.
I highly enjoyed this summary and would recommend it to anyone. I was given a copy of this book to review it.
China's One Child Policy
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. While this summary of "One Child" was interesting to read, it is also very sad. The book is about the effects of China's one child policy that was enacted in 1980. The Communist Party intended to strengthen the country with this policy, but it has turned into a national crisis.
