Summary of The Romanovs by Simon Sebag Montefiore | Includes Analysis
Preview:
Simon Sebag Montefiore's The Romanovs: 1613-1918 is a chronicle of the Romanov dynasty over its 300-year reign in Russia. The book focuses on the personalities, choices, and actions of the royal family, including their sexual and romantic relationships. Montefiore provides extensive quotations from the letters and diaries of the Romanovs, many of them unpublished. By telling the story of the Romanovs, Montefiore also tells the story of Russia's rise to empire.
The reign of the Romanovs began after the death in 1598 of Feodor Ivanovich, the last of the descendants of Ivan the Terrible. Numerous false heirs - called the False Dmitris - claimed the right to the throne. At the same time, Russia experienced a brutal famine, and Polish and Lithuanian forces invaded the country. The chaos of the Time of Troubles led a national assembly to choose Michael Feodorovich, nephew of a former tsarina, to be the next monarch. Michael was underage at the beginning of his reign so his father, Filaret, Patriarch of Russia, became effectively the first Romanov ruler.

Great information on the Romanovs of Russia
The British monarchy is well-known in history probably because, at some point, the sun never set on the British Empire. But, most people, if they have not already heard of the Romanovs in Russia, might have already known about one of them: Alexander I from Leo Tolstoyâs âWar and Peace.â If people need to know more about the Romanovs, they should read Sebag Montefioreâs chronicle of the Russian dynasty, using this 5-star summary book for reference. The summary starts with a great recap of how this ruling family came into power, beginning with Czar Michael I and then with successors such as Catherine the Great and aforementioned Alexander I and many others. Then, it outlines and analyzes 8 key points ranging from the difficult positions of czars and czarinas, to how these rulers used personal characteristics and sexual relationships to strengthen, or inadvertently weaken, their powers, to how they had set an example for future Russian rulers who came into power after the dynasty ended. Indeed, it is intriguing that communist leaders such as Stalin, who were so critical of the old ruling class of Russia, ended up imitating the Romanov style of autocracy. Just like the communist revolutionaries overthrew and killed Nicholas II, the last of the Romanov rulers, people who were angry with the communist autocrats put an end to communism altogether. Perhaps, the warning to Vladimir Putin mentioned in this book and elsewhere is that: repeat history and continue with your authoritarian way, but at some point, expect to be overthrown just like any other dictator in the past.
