The 2 Bookends: Colossians 2:6 and 3:1-2…just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him…Colossians 2:6Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:1-2Vs 8-22: Philosophy, legalism and mysticism“Fullness” (pleroma): In Christ is found everything you need to begin your Christian experience and to fulfill it.App: Beware of those who want to add worldly philosophies, ideas and rules to your faith in Christ.If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36Why does “the church” seem to enjoy imposing rules? (see Vs 23)What’s the problem with human effort? (see Vs 23b)NKJV: …but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. J.B. Philips: But in actual practice they do honor, not to God, but to man’s own pride. Amplified: …they are of no value in checking the indulgence of the flesh (the lower nature). [Instead, they do not honor God but serve only to indulge the flesh.] 3:1-4: The Right Focus“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30App: Let ministry flow from the greater work God is doing in us.Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life. John 3:14-15All Eyes on Jesus!1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
