Sun Tzu 147 Advance

Listen Later

Sun Tzu wrote, “It is a military axiom not to advance uphill against the enemy, nor to oppose him when he comes downhill.”

Think about that for a moment. What’s he really saying? He’s not just talking about soldiers on a battlefield two thousand years ago — he’s talking to you, right now, about how you face the struggles in your life. He’s telling you not to fight battles that tilt the odds against you unnecessarily. Don’t charge blindly uphill into an enemy who holds the high ground. Don’t stand in the path of unstoppable momentum. Strategy, not stubbornness, wins the day.

Too often we burn ourselves out fighting the wrong fight. We push against impossible odds, not because it’s the smart thing to do, but because our pride doesn’t want us to retreat, regroup, or rethink. And what happens? We fall harder, we lose ground, and we beat ourselves up for not being “tough enough.” But Sun Tzu’s wisdom reminds us that toughness isn’t just about enduring punishment — it’s about knowing when to hold back, when to pivot, and when to strike only on favorable ground.

Ask yourself: where in your life are you battling uphill right now? Maybe it’s trying to change someone who doesn’t want to change. Maybe it’s working harder at the wrong job instead of smarter toward your true path. Maybe it’s attacking your fears head-on in ways that only exhaust you instead of mastering the terrain and approaching from an angle of strength.

Victory comes when you control the field. That means setting conditions so that the fight is on your terms. That means preparation, patience, and precision. If the hill is too steep, then circle around. If momentum is rushing down at you, step aside and let it break itself on the ground. Don’t confuse wisdom with weakness. The greatest warriors win by choosing the right ground, not by dying bravely on the wrong one.

And here’s the real pep talk: You don’t need to prove yourself by always running uphill. You prove yourself by reaching the summit, no matter the path you take to get there. Every time you wait, every time you reposition, every time you outthink instead of out-punch, you’re stacking the odds in your favor. That’s not cowardice. That’s command.

So today, stop wasting your energy on battles that drain you but don’t move you closer to your goal. Shift the fight. Reframe the challenge. Build momentum on your side of the hill. Because once you’ve set the stage right, once you’ve taken the high ground, the struggle changes — and suddenly, the impossible becomes inevitable.

The enemy doesn’t always wear armor and carry a sword. Sometimes the enemy is fear. Sometimes it’s doubt. Sometimes it’s wasted effort. But the strategy is the same: don’t fight uphill. Position yourself where you are strongest. Then, and only then, advance with confidence.

Now go take the high ground. The hill is waiting — and it’s yours.
