SUNDAY - SEPTEMBER 28, 2025 "The Work Continued" Acts 13:1-12
What if God placed you exactly where you are for a purpose? Through the missionary journey of Paul and Barnabas in Acts 13, we discover the powerful truth that the Holy Spirit works through ordinary believers to accomplish extraordinary things.
The church at Antioch was simply worshiping, fasting, and praying when the Holy Spirit called Paul and Barnabas to carry the gospel message outward. Their obedience teaches us something profound about our own mission today. Just as they didn't wait until everyone in Jerusalem was saved before going to the ends of the earth, we too must proclaim Jesus wherever we are.
This message reveals a startling reality about modern Christianity - the gap between those who claim faith and those who truly believe. When 38% of Mississippians claim a personal relationship with Jesus but only 33% believe He is the only way to salvation, we're confronted with a 5% who think they are believers but aren't. This makes our gospel proclamation all the more urgent.
As Paul and Barnabas encountered opposition from a magician seeking to turn hearts away from faith, we're reminded that evil always opposes the truth. Yet their response wasn't to fight but to stand firmly on God's Word. When confronted with opposition, we don't need special powers - we have something better: the full revelation of Jesus Christ.
Perhaps most encouraging is how the Holy Spirit worked despite opposition. When the proconsul witnessed Paul's bold confrontation with evil, "he believed, for he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord." This reminds us that when we faithfully share Jesus, people will be astonished by the gospel's power.
Whether you've never trusted Christ as Savior or you've been holding back from sharing your faith, today is your opportunity to respond. The Holy Spirit is still calling, still empowering, and still astonishing people through ordinary believers who simply stand on the truth and proclaim Jesus as they go.
