What do we see when we look through the eyes of those who came before us?

This week’s special music accompanies the beginning of the story of Joseph and his brothers. Before Joseph’s journey carries him far from home, we meet a family already shaped by generations of complicated relationships, blessings, wounds, hopes, and choices.

“In My Father’s Eyes” offers a way into that story through the relationship between fathers and sons. Jacob himself was once the son wrestling with the legacy of Isaac and Abraham. Now he is the father, raising sons of his own and perhaps wondering what parts of the generations before him he has carried forward.

And for Joseph, suddenly removed from his family and everything familiar, the image of his father takes on an entirely different meaning.

This musical reflection explores the people who shape us, the lessons we struggle to pass on, the grief of separation, and the ways love can remain with us even when someone is no longer beside us.

This week’s special music draws from one of Charles Wesley’s most powerful hymns, “Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown,” a poetic reflection on Jacob’s mysterious nighttime wrestling match in Genesis 32.

Alone in the dark, Jacob clings to the stranger before him and refuses to let go until he receives a blessing. Wesley’s hymn enters that moment of struggle with honesty and wonder, giving voice to the soul that wrestles through fear, weakness, longing, and faith until the break of day.

This is not a song of easy answers. It is a song for those who have ever felt alone, uncertain, or caught in a struggle they do not fully understand. Yet in the wrestling, a deeper truth begins to emerge: the One we grapple with is not distant, but full of mercy. The One we fear may, in fact, be Love itself.

Where could we go that God could not find us?

Drawing on the imagery of Psalm 139, this week’s special music explores a God whose presence reaches farther than we can imagine—from the wings of the dawn to the farthest edge of the sea, from the heights of heaven to the places we would rather keep hidden.

Even darkness cannot conceal us. Our pain, anger, fear, mistakes, and questions are all still known by the God who searches the heart—and none of them can place us beyond the reach of divine love.

Nothing is beyond God.

Not distance. Not darkness. Not time. Not even the parts of ourselves we struggle to understand.

As we prepare to hear The Wheat in Our Weeds, this musical reflection reminds us that before we begin deciding what should be uprooted, God already sees the whole field—and continues to meet us there with a love that reaches farther than we ever could.

And then comes the realization: the door was always open.

The door is open. The call is still there. And we are not beyond being found.

“In my Father’s house, there are many rooms.”

What does it really mean to care for one another?
