The K Files has one more investigation for 2016 and the case is a blessedly more optimistic episode of the show, Sunshine Days, aka the one with Michael Emerson and The Brady Bunch.
The episode is also notable for being written and directed by executive producer Vince Gilligan, and it's one of the most heartfelt monster-of-the-week entries (filed under F for Frankenstein Monster, see also Post Modern Prometheus, Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose, The Goldberg Effect, and hoo boy a slew of others).
Flashing forward now to season nine for this special investigation, K Files agents find Doggett, Reyes, Walter Skinner (SKIN MAN) and Scully are part of a bizarre murder case where the main suspect has a spooky obsession with old timey family comedy, The Brady Bunch. What it all comes down to is that our monster's telekinetic ability is not only the ultimate proof of Mulders' X-Files-y truth, but also somehow fueled by love.
Love generated by Vince Gilligan, as always. This was Gilligan's second directorial effort, after season seven's comedy ep, Je Souhaite. The recreation of The Brady Bunch house set was built for this episode. So, even though it didn't ramp up to the series finale, "The Truth," which would deal with the series' overarching alien colonization mythology, Sunshine Days is still a case file worth opening.
