In this episode,  I am speaking (and smiling) with Jim Flaherty, who was a madman on NYC’s Madison Avenue, an innkeeper, father, grandfather, great grandfather, a caregiver of a partner with dementia, and now, an author.

  Jim’s new book, DEAR OLD FRIENDS—A LOVING REMINDER THE BAND WONT’ STOP PLAYING TILL YOU STOP DANCING, tackles the most important part of aging healthfully—your mental attitude—being involved with living, and loving life, every day.  Jim speaks, writes, and gives care from an interesting viewpoint—he’s 86 years old…he told me he’s going on 60 . . . but he is 86.  Besides his book, he has been a guest blogger speaking to aging women and is a frequent speaker at elderly residential and rehab centers.  Jim is also a director of his church and says with an aging congregation, it’s important to keep them involved, mentally and spiritually.

In this episode, I had the honor of speaking with Bill Cohen. Mr. Cohen is a caregiver support group leader and speaker, an Alzheimer's Association volunteer, a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA)®, and the owner of Cohen Caregiving Support Consultants. 

His loving and talented mother, Sheila, lost her home to Hurricane Katrina. Then, she lost her health, ability to create beautiful art and, ultimately, her life due to Alzheimer's. For almost 10 years, Bill was her primary caregiver and advocate, not just her elder son.

Bill shares his story and journey with his late mom, answers specific questions and concerns, and provides advice on how to manage care and behaviors, and how to practice self-care and prevention.

Bill has completed multiple caregiving and aging courses through the Alzheimer's Association and the Society for Certified Senior Advisors™️, has a financial services and government background, and earned business degrees from Boston and Portland State Universities. He has lived in the Portland, Oregon area for 37 years with his wife of 41 years, Lori.

November is National Caregiver Month, so we are honoring caregivers everywhere this month and always for their selfless and heroic job!

In this episode, I had the honor of speaking with Karen Warner Schueler on Roadmap to  Resilient Caregiving. After two decades of corporate executive coaching, Karen knows what it means to make changes in your life. When her late husband was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer out of the blue, Karen instantly joined a silent army of informal, unpaid family caregivers. Like all caregivers who came before her, Karen figured out what she needed to do to support her husband and her family through the journey of his illness. Re-established company to focus on needs of senior population as Medical Insurance Solutions for Seniors, LLC in 2016.  Her primary focus is working with folks enrolling in Medicare in selection of complimentary plans such as supplemental insurance.

In this episode, I had the honor of speaking with Dr. Nathaniel Chin about Aducanumab/Aduhelm the new FDA approved Alzheimer's drug. Dr. Chin is an assistant professor in the division of geriatrics and gerontology. Dr. Chin received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He then went to the University of California-San Diego for his internal medicine residency. After completing his residency he spent the next two years working as a Hospitalist for Kaiser Permanente before returning to WI in 2015 to help his mother provide care for his father who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He completed his geriatric fellowship in 2016 and spent another year in a dementia research fellowship within geriatrics. He was then hired as an assistant professor. Dr. Chin sees patients in the UW Health Memory Clinic and in addition to providing diagnoses he focuses on palliative care in chronic disease management. In addition to his clinical and research work, he is the medical director of the WI Alzheimer’s Disease Research Study and the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer’s Prevention Study, the Co-Leader of the ADRC Clinical Core, as well as the Associate Director of the Geriatric Memory Clinics at UW-Health. He also serves on the board of the WI Alzheimer’s Association and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Dr. Chin is a Co-Investigator on 5 NIH grants, with one of them focused biomarker disclosure. He presents frequently on the topics of AD and geriatrics and in the past 3 years has given over 55 presentations at local, regional and national conferences. He has created over 100 podcasts on AD research and caregiving topics under his podcast called Dementia Matters.

Debby holds a Graduate Certificate in Consumer Health Advocacy – UW Madison, and Board Certification from the Patient Advocate Certification Board. She is the Founder/CEO of Patient Care Partners, LLC, a private patient advocacy firm since 2016, serving southcentral WI and beyond. 

In this episode, I had the honor to speak with Therese Morrissey. Therese has been working as an Advance Care Planning Social Worker at Dean Health Plan since March 2019. Her prior health care experience, over 18 years, includes working as a Complex Case Manager at UW Health, an in-home and inpatient Social Worker at Agrace Hospice and a Medical Social Worker at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, Oregon. She received her master’s degree in Social Work at Loyola University-Chicago and her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University. Therese has a special interest in helping people to begin planning for unforeseen medical events and end of life. This lessens burden to loved ones and better ensures that they receive health care that matches their values and preferences.
