Tribunal of Conscience

Superheroes and Empire

🎙️ Podcast Preview: Superheroes and Empire

American superheroes present themselves as guardians of humanity—but their deeper function is to reassert the legitimacy of unilateral intervention. Superman may be alien, but his code is American. Captain America wears the flag on his chest. Batman turns wealth, surveillance, and trauma into violent order.

These figures are not myths of shared vulnerability. They are myths of domination: lone righteous actors—usually male, often white, and structurally elite—imposing control over chaos.

The superhero mythos pretends to critique power but always circles back to it, making power itself the savior. In this way, the genre becomes less about justice and more about empire justifying itself by the villain it selects.
