Supervision for mentors: The importance of a reflective practice

Sandra Wilson and Nicci Statham discuss how supervision can be a powerful but under-utilised tool for mentors in many different contexts, providing much-needed support when it comes to a mentor's self-care and wellbeing. They also emphasise how a supervisor can guide the mentor to develop, review and reflect on their practice, ultimately supporting them to be the best mentor they can be.

Sandra Wilson is the EMCC UK Deputy Director for Supervision Practice. Sandra specialises in supervision, holistic executive and team coaching. She enjoys working with leaders and communities who traditionally may not have access to this development opportunity. Sandra is an accredited EMCC Global Quality Individual Coach/Mentor Supervisor (ESIA) and Senior Practitioner Coach. She has a PG Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring, a Diploma in Team Coaching and an MA in Social Policy and Criminology.

She has headed up Coaching and Mentoring services within The Cabinet Office and British Transport Police. In 2022 Sandra along with her team was awarded the national Coaching Culture Award for Forward Thinkers.

Nicci Statham is an executive/leadership coach and coaching supervisor, committed to transforming leadership and organisational culture through developing empowered leaders with sharp, powerful self-awareness and sustainable behaviour change.

Nicci predominantly works with executive & senior leaders in Further, Higher and Secondary Education, the NHS and other public bodies with success rates of over 100%. She has over 18 years experience, 2500+ coaching/facilitation hours under her belt and is a CPD accredited confidence/power of purpose licensed facilitator and mentor.
