KEY TAKEAWAYS
Football affects around 3 billion people globally and is constantly causing huge amounts of stress and heartache. Chris has supported Aston Villa from a very young age. A relationship that's lasted longer than any other, the longest commitment in Chris's life and it’s not all been plain sailing.
Unlike marriages and relationships, the support for your club doesn't end. You're in it for the long haul. Once you align yourself with a football team, there's no going back.
As a result of football, hundreds of millions of people are left feeling let down every year. It’s one of the most masochists of personal endeavours. Football fans feel the high hysteria and love for the team when you win a game, but if you support a rubbish team this is usually a one-off. Nevertheless, regardless of the result, you continue to support your team with the up-most passion.
There could be tens of thousands or even millions of fans just like you, feeling anger, frustration, heartache, love and loyalty and every year you're filled with the hope that it might be different. This hope is given to you by the few select fans that end up elated and overjoyed at the team's success and you'll realise that this could be you. We allow ourselves to believe that it could be us celebrating, it could be us winning.
The reality is all of us have the choice to leave any unfulfilling relationships and find pastures new. You just need to be brave, make a choice and move on.
BEST MOMENTS
“In all my years as a Villa supporter, I have encountered countless games that have left me feeling disappointed and wanting to leave, but I’ll always go back.”
“Even in the darkest moments, we as football supports allow ourselves to hope.”
