Surprisingly complex perpetual motion device

Listen Later

This device was much more complicated than I was expecting. It gives the illusion of balls defying gravity by going down a spiral chute and then returning to a higher height. In reality the unit is using circuitry similar to a rail gun to accelerate the ball.

It appears to be a knock-off of an original product handmade from wood by William Le who makes these in his workshop in Vietnam.

I got an early introduction to the circuitry when the unit arrived faulty and needed a broken track bridged to fix the 12V supply section that is important for ball sensing and the main coil's MOSFET drive. By driving the MOSFET gate with 12V it has a lower on-state resistance allowing for higher coil current.

All the main components had their numbers lasered or ground off, which was pointless, since any decent electronic designer could work out what all the components are.

The most notable thing about this unit is that it uses a rail gun style circuit to accelerate a steel ball.

This unit came from AliExpress (not a sponsor):-

Note that I paid about £15 for mine. Also note that while it is novel, it gets annoying fast.

If you want an original, William Le sells them on Amazon, although it was shown as not shipping to my area.
