The "Troubled" Teen Industry is a multi-billion-dollar-a-year industry (it fluctuates between 12-23 billion in 2019 and over 50 in 2020) that is a network of educational consultants, juvenile transport companies, wilderness programs, religious academies, and behavioral modification boarding schools designed to help to “fix bad children” using outdated therapies or therapies that are current but misapplied, isolation, forced labor, severely limited freedoms, and various restraint methods.
Even after tens of thousands of reported accounts of child abuse, medical neglect, illegal practices, and hundreds of deaths, including homicides, these facilities are still in business today.
Our goal with the TTI Roundtable is to bring awareness and provide support to the people who have fallen victim to these forms of abuse.
Jon is an Elan survivor from 1990-93. He has spent the last couple of years telling his story, raising awareness, and working to bring survivors and allies together into a movement that can make a difference for the survivor community and for all traumatized teens.
Tara is an Elan survivor as well from 2004-2008. She has also focused on sharing her story with others over the past couple of years.
Nora is a survivor of what is now Outback Therapeutic Expeditions and the now-closed Mission Mountain School, a therapeutic, all-girls boarding school. She attended these programs from 2003 until she left at 18 in 2005. She is responsible for creating the TTI survivor ribbon as well as the Discord server, TTI Survivor Safe Space, a place for survivors and allies to come together, discuss issues, find support and friendship, plan activism events, and discover healing together.
