The woman at the center of our story was a young French noblewoman. She owned land. She was educated. She could read. She was, by the standards of her age, someone of standing and the kind of woman who, might have learned Latin, played music, read philosophy, corresponded with intellectual peers. She didn't deserve what happened to her.
