Welcome back to Season 2 of Survivor Series Stories. In episode 4, we sat down with Shabaka Shakur. On January 11, 1988, 2 men were murdered in Brooklyn. Shabaka Shakur was brought in for questioning the next day. Although there were several loopholes in many of the witnesses stories, as well as alibis that could prove Shabaka did not commit these crimes, one crooked detective's story landed him in jail. On February 15, 1989, Shabaka was convicted of two counts of second degree murder. He was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. After more than 25 years locked away, and much hard work and anguish, Shabaka's charges were dismissed in 2015. This story is a wild example of how JUST ONE crooked cop could be a detriment to the lives of so many innocent young Black men in America. The system was not build for us, it is broken, and has been for a very very long time.
