Survivors commemorate 1947 insurrection in Madagascar

In this week's edition: we meet with survivors of the 1947 insurrection in Madagascar; Kathrada's funeral turns political in South Africa and camel racing in Sudan takes flight. One of the least-known massacres of French colonial history was commemorated in Madagascar on Wednesday, the 70th anniversary of the Malagasy Uprising. Around 40,000 people were killed in the French settlers' war against the insurgents.

In South Africa, anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Kathrada died on Tuesday aged 87. He spent 26 years in prison, much of that alongside Nelson Mandela on the notorious Robben Island. Both were part of a group sentenced to life imprisonment in the historic Rivonia trial of 1964. Kathrada's funeral was overtly political with a fiery eulogy calling out the country's leadership. President Jacob Zuma claimed he was asked to stay away although the Kathrada foundation said they just told him he couldn't speak. Another of the defendants in the Rivonia trial spoke to France 24 about his friend's legacy.

Finally, camel racing is a fast-growing sport in the Middle East and some parts of Africa. Sudan is one of the main countries that is developing the sport sponsored by the United Arab Emirates.
