Susan B. Anthony's Pardon

Listen Later

Did you vote in the 2020 presidential election? First, you really should have, women didn't always have the right to vote. Second, you should thank suffragists like Susan B. Anthony. Her work moved the needle towards making voting equal for everyone. She died in 1906, years before the 19th Amendment was ratified.

Speaking of the 19th Amendment, Susan helped to write what we know as the 19th Amendment way back in 1878. It was presented to congress, but obviously, it didn't pass. When the 19th Amendment finally did pass, it used the same wording as what was presented so many years earlier. Amazing stuff.

So it seems obvious that for our very first episode we would want to learn more about Susan. Yes, this is our very first episode, so please excuse the sound quality and weird editing mistakes, we were still learning to crawl. In this episode, Eva and I look deeper into the life of just one of the suffragists that helped secure a woman's right to vote.

We discover what the hell temperance (not drinking) had to do with suffrage, we learn about the scandalous fashion craze of the 1800s, the bloomer dress, and we praise the friendship between Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
