Lokakuussa 1994 Susan Smith soitti hätäkeskukseen ja kertoi, että hänelle entuudestaan tuntematon mies oli kaapannut hänen autonsa, jonka sisällä olivat myös kaksi hänen pientä lastaan. Susanin puhelusta alkoi laaja poliisitutkinta ja mediahuomio, johon kukaan ei osannut varautua. Lopulta poliisit pääsivät Susanin ristiriitaisen kertomuksen perusteella oikean syyllisen jäljille melko nopeasti.
