An officer places a suspect under arrest. The suspect immediately collapses. His body shakes. His eyes roll back. He foams at the mouth. The officer calls for an ambulance. The paramedics arrive. They check his vitals. They find nothing wrong. The suspect continues shaking. The paramedic tells him to stop. The suspect stops. He stands up. He walks to the police car. He is not sick. He is acting.
Bodycam footage captures the entire performance. The suspect goes from convulsing on the ground to walking calmly to the back of the patrol car in seconds. The officer does not laugh. The paramedic does not laugh. The judge will not laugh. Faking a medical emergency is not just embarrassing. It is a crime. The suspect was charged with obstruction of justice.
In this episode, I examine the phenomenon of suspects who fake seizures, heart attacks, and other medical emergencies to avoid arrest. The performances are often theatrical. The outcomes are always the same. The suspect goes to jail anyway. The only difference is that now everyone has seen them flop around on the floor.
Turn down the lights, put on your headphones, and press play because faking a seizure to avoid prison does not work. But it is very entertaining to watch.
