Bert Gavin is a diligent worker who commutes daily from the fictional town of Laurel Creek to his job in downtown San Francisco. He becomes increasingly suspicious and resentful of his wife's infidelity during his long work hours. Determined to end his turmoil, Bert devises a plan to murder his wife, timing the act to coincide with the passing of a train behind their house, using the noise to mask the crime.
