South Africa’s public procurement spend accounts for 20 percent of our gross domestic product and 30 percent of national, provincial, and local budgets. Public procurement wields enormous purchasing power, accounting for up to 30 percent of GDP in many developing economies. This purchasing power is critical in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – specifically Goal 12 which targets “sustainable consumption and production patterns”.
