Swan Lake, composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875–76, is a ballet that has become one of the most popular of all time. The story revolves around Princess Odette, who is transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. The original production premiered in Moscow in 1877, choreographed by Julius Reisinger. Although there are various versions, most ballet companies base their stagings on the 1895 revival by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Tchaikovsky’s score was revised for this revival by Riccardo Drigo. Swan Lake remains a timeless masterpiece in the world of classical ballet.
