The Sydney Metro West has completed its tunnelling phase, with boring machines breaking through the final sandstone underneath Hunter Street in the CBD. The 24-kilometre western line from Westmead to Hunter Street is part of a 12-year project that has excavated 128 kilometres of tunnel and removed 14.7 million tonnes of rock across multiple metro lines. The $27 billion project aims to slash travel times and increase housing density around public transport, with the line scheduled to open in 2032.
