VII. Masons Condemned

Freemasonry had been under papal condemnation since the 18th century, beginning with Clement XII’s In Eminenti (1738) and reaffirmed by successive pontiffs. [^27] Pius IX, in harmony with his predecessors, regarded Masonic influence as a significant factor in the spread of rationalist, secular, and anti-clerical ideologies in Europe and Latin America. His Syllabus of Errors implicitly reinforces earlier condemnations by rejecting principles associated with Masonic political and philosophical agendas, particularly those undermining the Church’s authority and the public role of religion. [^28]

VIII. Theological Significance

The Syllabus of Errors stands in continuity with the Council of Trent and earlier papal teaching, reaffirming the Church’s duty to guard divine revelation and moral law against distortion. [^29] Its approach reflects a definitive posture rooted in centuries of doctrinal clarity—yet it also provided a reference point for later magisterial developments. Vatican II’s Dignitatis Humanae clarified the Church’s teaching on religious freedom, distinguishing between immunity from coercion in civil law and the moral obligation to seek the truth in Christ. [^30]

The pontificate of St. Pius X extended the work of Pius IX by addressing the emerging threat of Modernism. In Pascendi Dominici Gregis (1907) and the Syllabus of Modernist Errors (Lamentabili Sane), Pius X built upon the anti-rationalist and anti-indifferentist principles articulated in 1864, identifying new forms of theological error that sought to undermine both Scripture and dogma from within. [^31]

Protect against error, susceptible to marketing, maybe women more than women. Weart a girdle, no, body shaper yes.

Leo XIII St. Michael prayer, defend us against Satan looking for souls to devour.

Only has intellect, unsatiable appetite. Devours, he can’t be fed by God, cunning,

Soft drinks understand how to manipulate human condition, Satan much more capable.

Evil sent out in pair, tow vices. Virtue resides in between vices. This were we need to be rooted.
