Synethia Kelly - Artist

Listen Later

In this episode, you’ll hear from artist Synethia Kelly. Synethia talks about growing up in Mississippi, running track and field in high school, how Hurricane Katrina led her to Austin, how she became homeless, overcoming anxiety and depression, meeting her idol rapper 50 Cent, and how Art From The Streets has given her hope and a purpose.

Art From The Streets is a nonprofit based in Austin, Texas. The mission of Art From the Streets is to provide a safe and encouraging environment in which the positive spirit and creativity for those experiencing homelessness are nurtured through their own artistic expression. These artistic endeavors form a pathway to self-determination by means of the sense of achievement, social connections, and income generated through the pursuit of their art. Because focusing on housing alone does not achieve other equally important goals that are relevant and motivating to improving and sustaining a quality of life.

Original artwork is for sale in art shows throughout Austin, Texas. At these shows in the community the artist receives 95% of sales. Artists receive 60% of the final price of online artwork and merchandise sales.
