Your next online purchase may not be made by you. A retail giant has just opened its shelves to AI agents, with written rules attached.
Its great rival, meanwhile, cut an agent off its site just twelve days after launch. Its reasons say a lot about what is really at stake.
A new agent no longer even waits to be asked: it writes to you, every morning, before you have said a word.
And an executive describes six months spent handing his life to a machine, right down to his mother's birthday flowers. Along with one mistake he won't repeat.
A catalogue mailed into French homes in 1885 helps explain what comes next, and what merchants had to learn all over again.
In the end, the real stake isn't the purchase. It's who decides what you get to see.
Handing over the choice is one thing. Can you take it back?

On some days, more than half of the music arriving on a major platform was never played by a single musician.
And yet almost nobody listens to it. Both numbers are true at the same time.
In a blind test, nearly every listener gets it wrong about which track is human. So who does the sorting, and on whose behalf? And
what is all that music really for?
In New York, a man has just been sentenced for getting his artificial songs played by thousands of fake listeners. What he collected, he took from real artists.
Meanwhile, a question once reserved for experts is landing in your hands: this image, this sound, was it a machine? For text, still no.
Ninety thousand a day: a number that doesn't mean what you think it means.
And a painting the whole of Paris laughed at, back in the spring of 1863.

In a few weeks, across the European Union, text written by ChatGPT will carry an invisible mark. You won't see it.
To read it, you need a key. And for now, that key is lent out on application.
European law imposed the mark. The companies keep the key, and only approved experts may apply for it.
In August, we looked at the mark of a first lab. This week, the second one adds its own: the same principle, but a very different map.
Meanwhile, AI is moving into your documents, fixing your sentences right inside your own file. So who wrote it, then?
And the newest model reaches every single account, free ones included, within a single day.
One word in ten: that's all you need to change for the mark to fade sharply.
And a metal wire in a sheet of paper, in Italy, more than seven centuries ago.

An AI agent asks for permission to attack. The answer is automatic. Sometimes, it goes ahead.
This week, the most powerful models are no longer for sale to everyone. They are handed out in circles.
The first one you keep to yourself: a lab scraps the release of its next model, after a public institute watched what its older sibling tried with its filters off.
The second one you keep for a chosen few, and for them, the guardrails come off.
The third one has no door left at all.
Between the two extremes, a gap of four months. It doesn't say who is winning. It says how long a door stays useful.
And while six executives promise to have themselves checked, someone else walks onto the pitch. Not the one anyone expected.
And a medieval fair in France, where it wasn't the punishment that held the rule together.

This week, the AI labs asked for rules. Not just any rules.
On Monday, a proposal for global standards that carefully leaves out what would bother them most.
On Tuesday, a president rejects any global rule. That same day, two labs start a price war.
On Wednesday, at the Security Council, the very companies governments want to rein in come to brief states on the risks. Three guests out of four.
Meanwhile, four subscribers have gone to court, with an accusation nobody saw coming. Between their lawsuit and the price war, four days: a gap that proves nothing, but puts everything in place.
Then a report nobody has confirmed, which we treat exactly as such, and which would change how you read everything else.
And a dictionary, in sixteen eighty five, that cost a member of the French Academy his seat.

This week, the rule was not written in a text. It was written in a number.
On Thursday, one lab published three measurements of itself. The first says how much of its own research is now led by its model. The number is striking, and it is six months old.
The same day, a researcher at a rival lab explained why our ability to read these systems is degrading.
And in a Chinese report published three days after the model it describes, fifty-six engineers recount building an artificial intelligence with the help of that same artificial intelligence.
Three serious publications, honest about their limits. And in all three, the one measuring is the one being measured.
A British commission in 1714 already had this problem.
One number sits underneath all the others, and nobody mentioned it.

Three labs proved something this week. Only one of them let the world check.
On Tuesday, an extraordinary claim, announced on a phone call with reporters. Eighty eight hours of compute, ten thousand agents. And a file that was never filed.
Two mathematicians had been working the same front for almost a year, out of their own research funds. What they published, anyone can verify.
Four days earlier, another lab had done the exact opposite. Eleven days of work, thirteen million lines, and the door left open.
On Friday, a one petabyte map of the human genome. The only result of the week an outside lab can test against its own patients.
And a commission of the French Academy of Sciences, in eighteen sixty four, where one of the two scientists refused to show up.

We are handed models, tools, assistants. But which road do they travel on, and who owns it?
On Wednesday an agreement is signed. On Thursday it is made public. The warehouse where researchers and companies drop off their models changes hands.
The buyer makes the chips almost all of today's AI runs on. It promises, in writing, that its own chips will stay optional.
The same day, one lab decides on its own to cut a widely used tool off from its models. No judge, no regulator. One decision, one post, one date.
Then on Thursday morning, three assistants go down within the same half hour. One of them named its cause in two words, and they are exactly ours.
And a story from the nineteen fifties, where a plain metal box made the owner of the ship irrelevant. Then the ports changed hands.
This episode opens season two.

We are handed models, tools, assistants. Free, or nearly free. So where is the price?
On Wednesday evening, it was written down. In an accounting document filed with the SEC, one line moves from 119 to 279 billion dollars in a single quarter.
The filing names the reason in one word. Memory.
On Monday, in Tokyo, a conglomerate placed the largest retail bond issue in Japanese history to fund its AI commitments. Seven years, sold to households, and a coupon that raises questions.
The same day, in Taiwan, prosecutors indicted nine people. Servers that were meant to stay on the island went somewhere else.
One way out did open this week, an agent running entirely on your own machine. It has a price too, and you may not like where it hides.
And a story a century old, where families funded construction sites they would never see.

Since late July, the financial press repeated the same number: 250 billion dollars of guarantees on the largest construction site in AI.
On Monday, a document filed with the US regulator gave the real number. 105 billion. And it is not even an investment.
The gap is 145 billion, the price of the distance between what you say and what you sign.
Two days later, another filing: a chipmaker grants its own customer an option to buy its shares.
Meanwhile, on your screen, the logic runs the other way. On Monday, advertising enters ChatGPT across 31 European countries. On the free tier, and on the eight euro subscription.
And one assistant has just moved onto the desktop, wired into its maker's advertising accounts.
Plus an instrument bankers have used since the nineteenth century, which never pays on the merchant's word.
