Canada’s foreign affairs minister Chrystia Freeland was the brainchild behind a risky, top-secret plan to save more than 1200 workers belonging to Syria’s civil defence force.

Only a group of a few hundred made it to the Israeli border. The White Helmets, twice nominated for the Nobel peace prize, have been a long time enemy of Bashar Al Assad, for their careful documentation of his war crimes.
