Our society, as reflected by the murder of a healthcare CEO, conveys that people are actually pleased with murder! These actions should appall us! Our text of the message today shows us three reasons why this attitude should (rightly) be condemned.

It is the most wonderful time of the year, but not for everyone. The American Psychological Association (APA) notes that there is an approximately 38 percent increase for short-term depression in people between the ages of 15-44 during this time of year. In our text, we see it is clear that this prophet of God (Elijah) is depressed (yes, even God's people can become depressed). Note how God deals with Elijah regarding his depression.

Thanksgiving - A time where we should be giving thanks to God. We should be a thankful people! As believers, we should model our lives with Jesus as our example.

There will be some traveling ahead for us! Traveling is a wonderful thing. The places God has for us is so special. And, we will not--as even now--be alone. Jesus will always be with us!

Scriptural practice in mission work has been eroding over the years (our observance as a local church; this message is not designed to be critical in any way). Does the (local) church conduct a submissive assessment in considering a missionary's effectiveness? We are held accountable to do so.

The "call of duty" has existed for many years. In our text today, we see Joab, the commanding general under David, is compelling the soldiers to answer to the call of duty. It IS right and proper to honor veterans...those who respond to this call of duty.
