The Taipei Zoo’s panda cub has been given the name “Yuanbao.” That’s according to an announcement the zoo made on Sunday. The name Yuanbao received over 8,700 votes in a naming contest, beating out the runner-up, “Rourou.”
The Taipei Zoo has tried breeding pandas every year during the short mating window of Yuanbao’s parents, Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, as well as artificial insemination. They have failed six times. Now, on their seventh attempt this year, the zoo has finally welcomed a newborn cub.
