Ман Тоҷикистонро дедорам
You'd be forgiven for not knowing a lot about Tajikistan. Over 90% of its land is mountainous and 100% of its people are endearing!
In this episode, we have a chat with My Friend From Tajikistan, Alisa. She takes us around her hometown Khujand which is the second-largest city in the country. We discuss everything from growing up in the post-Soviet era to everyday life in the little-known Central Asian nation. We also briefly touch on how bad I smelled during my stay there.
Music:
Sapajou - Darbu (PDM)
Traditional Tajik Music (PDM)
Show notes:
Places discussed in and around Khujand-
Arbob Cultural Palace, Kayrakkum Reservoir, House Museum Kamal Khuzhandi, Mausoleum of Sheik Muslekheddin, Mausoleum of Sheik Muslekheddin, Panjshanbe Market and National Central Complex "Oshi Palov".
Food-
Plov or Osh is considered to be the national dish of Tajikistan. This dish is made in giant pots called Kazan and served in markets all over. It consists mainly of chopped meat, vegetables, dried fruit, and rice but there are hundreds of variations. There is an old Turkish saying "There are as many kinds of Plov as there are cities in the Muslim world."
Non or Naan is round bread which is typically made in a tandoor or clay oven. As Alisa mentions, it's an important part of life in her country.
