Take-Two CEO on Borderlands Movie Impact

Listen Later

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has addressed the impact of the recent Borderlands movie, which received overwhelmingly negative reviews from both critics and audiences. Despite the film's poor performance at the box office and its failure to recoup its budget, Zelnick highlighted that the movie did not harm the Borderlands video game franchise. Instead, it actually boosted sales of the video games within the franchise. Zelnick mentioned that the hype surrounding the film led to an increase in sales of the catalog games, such as Borderlands 2, Tales From the Borderlands, and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

Zelnick acknowledged the challenges of adapting video game intellectual property into movies, a point he has emphasized in previous interviews. He also noted that the economic impact of licensing a game IP for a movie is relatively small, so there is little financial risk involved.

The Borderlands movie, which was released in August 2024 and starred actors like Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, was widely panned by critics and fans. However, the negative reception did not deter fans from engaging with the video game series, as evidenced by the increased game sales following the film's release.

Additionally, Zelnick discussed the ongoing development of Borderlands 4, which faces the task of regaining fan trust after the mixed reception of Borderlands 3.
