“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

A person cannot “earn” eternal life by going through a series of self-denying actions. Whoever renounces his own life and surrenders to Christ (accepting his gift of grace) will find out that he has new life- both here and forever.
