As moms, we’re all solving generally the same problems as moms. There is so much innovation out there. Moms are solving problems in creative ways everyday. Whitney feels like it’s her job to be the detective to find those ways and then share them with other moms.
Whitney likes to think of motherhood as a career. With a career you would have overarching goals and objectives. She teaches us how to write our own job description. We get to choose how we are going to mother our children. We get to craft and choose how we are going to approach it using our own priorities. (A Mom’s Job- How She Moms Podcast from last week- covers this in a beautiful way.) The wild card is our children and their personalities and needs also impact the way we need and want to mom.
As you are scrolling Instagram there are two ways you can look at other moms. You can worry that you aren’t doing a good job, that you are failing. Instead you could look at it from a more positive point of view, and appreciate the diversity and differences between all these other moms. We can be amazed by each other, and celebrate each other instead of being jealous or feeling we are feeling short.
It’s impossible for us to have all the qualities and all the strengths. So that means we get to pick! We can write our own job description (Click here for Whitney’s printable worksheets!). Here is a way you can start!
First it’s good to get a bird’s eye view and take a good look at these areas:
Physical Needs
Show them love
Teach them
When you have these large objectives in mind, it’s makes it easier to stay on track with little things that come up.
Next you factor in your kids’ needs. Whitney typed up a list of basic needs: food, shelter, and safety. She brought the list to her family and had everybody share if these needs were being met. Then the kids each makes lists of wants and needs, then had them rank their top 5. Hearing what they needed helped Whitney prioritize what was most important on her list.
When you are done doing this, take stock of what a typical week looks like with your different responsibilities. Look at things daily and weekly or monthly. Also look at motherhood and household responsibilities as different categories.
For example, what has worked for Whitney is to rank things in this order:
Faith/Spirituality
Health- healthy food and physical exercise
Academic Learning/School
During this COVID quarantine, Whitney has also realized how important it is for her to make time for self care in the form of alone time. Sometimes she even drives somewhere and works in her car.
You’ll notice a clean house and clean kids are not on the top of the list right now. Other moms may have that further to the top. That is the beauty of making your own tailored job description. Being a mom is very individualized.
Our job descriptions will also change with the seasons of our lives. Sometimes the season you’re in means the logistics are going to supersede your objectives.
Whitney also finds that she works better when she is under some constraints. Often limits for her are a breeding ground for creativity.
