Life, Living It and Loving It

Taking Losses and Taking Responsibility

Listen Later

If you’re willing to share in the successes of your workforce, then should you also accept accountability when failures happen?

That’s the question that Gordon found himself asking lately, and it inspired him to think about the fascinating, and often little-discussed topic of taking losses. Managers and team leaders often discuss teamwork and team spirit, but surely it’s a two-way street?

In this week’s show, Gordon discusses the flip side of delegation; how to deal with your own accountability when things don’t go perfectly.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When you delegate, even if it’s externally, to an agency or freelancer, you need to make your level of accountability clear, and also set realistic expectations and deadlines.

  • Theoretically, if you consistently outsource work to the same place, it should improve and become more consistent, as that agency will grow to understand your requirements and expectations.

  • If these expectations are consistently not met, then it’s up to you to either make your instructions clearer, or to find someone else who can perform the task better. You do have a level of accountability in this equation.

  • If you share in your team’s successes, it’s only fair that you take at least part-ownership when there are losses, too.

  • One advantage of taking ownership, is that you will build a stronger team. Your team spirit will increase powerfully if your team believe that you are all on the same page.

  • Your team should always feel empowered enough to suggest, and maybe even implement, ideas and processes that can help your business to grow.

BEST MOMENTS

‘If you share in the wins, shouldn’t you be sharing in the losses as well?’

‘Yes it is their job. But it's your job to make sure they do their job’

’There shouldn’t be anyone out there looking out for your business more than you are’

‘By placing the blame on someone, you won’t create a healthy environment to work in’

‘I want them to feel supported'

‘Assume noble intent'
