Jesus issues the call for true discipleship in startling terms! Taking up the cross is a call to utter loyalty to him even to the point of death.  Only the grace and strength the Spirit supplies in the time of need can give us confident hope in being such a disciple. Deny yourself is not about being less selfish or looking out for others or making time for God and Jesus. It has nothing to do with t-shirts or slogans. It is the call to come and die. As his own people those who belong to him by faith we must have total loyalty to his person.
