As we explore mathematics from the perspective of cultural relevance, it is imperative that we support students in moving beyond problem solving towards mathematical modelling. Far too often, students are engaged in defined problems that require them to apply Polya's four stages of problem solving. Mathematizing Student Thinking is about supporting teachers in assigning ill-defined problems that require students to engage in mathematical modelling. In this session, I will highlight the importance of ill-defined problems and such problems require students to broaden their approach to problem solving to include mathematical modelling. It is about supporting students in becoming confident and capable math learners who can mathematize a situation and solve real-world problems.
