From Apple WWDC 2022, Some Accessibility and system stuff I have come Across so Far
Thought I’d focus on Mac OS for the Moment
System Preferences
Completely new interface with a Table to choose preference settings, and then a scroll area to use for VoiceOver users.
In other words, similar to the iPad Settings layout.
Also in System Settings/Accessibility, under Audio, you can now choose Background sounds, similar to iOS.
Clock
The Clock iOS app is now on the Mac giving the same access to World clock, Alarm, Stopwatch, and Timer.
FaceTime or Zoom
In Preferences within Zoom or under the Video menu in FaceTime, you can now choose your iPhone as the video camera. Using the back camera for video.
Your iPhone will make a sound when the camera is connected to the Mac.
VoiceOver
VoiceOver will now detect Tabs, double spaces etc.
VoiceOver Utility
Under Speech, you can now choose Eloquence voices, similar to iOS.
Also many other voices available for English and Non English voices.
Speaking of Apple WWWDC, Remember Swift Playgrounds for Learning Coding
If you have a Mac or an iPad, you can use Playgrounds (Swift Playgrounds) to learn how to code in a fun way plus in my case, have fun coding a Drone (Tell Edu) or a Robot (Dash) to fly or roll around playing songs and flashing lights.
A Reminder about Audio Description
Continuing on from the excellent job that Apple does in Audio Describing all their Apple Keynotes, I’d like to remind you that there is a lot of content available in Disney, Netflix, Prime Video, and also Apple’s own TV Plus that has lots of content that is Audio Described.
I’m currently enjoying the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series in Disney, and Love Death and robots on Netflix.
Let us not also forget that Audio Description is still on ABC and SBS digital TV as well.
Remember to turn Audio Description on in your Apple products in particular to enjoy your TV shows and Movies.
Sharing Audio on the Apple TV 4K
One really great thing I enjoy with my Apple TV 4K, and Audio Description, is sharing audio between my AirPods and my Daughter’s AirPods so we can listen to the show together and not disturb anyone else in the family: a really nifty feature, and very easy to activate.
Vision Australia Alexa Skill
This skill has been in the wild for a while, so thought it was time to let folks know.
If you ask your Alexa enabled device:
“Open Vision Australia”
You will be presented with a spoken menu from which you can make choices to drill down further in the skill.
Main main menu options are:
Enjoy.
