Talking "The Bullied Brain" with Jennifer Fraser Ph.D.

Listen Later

Hello listeners and welcome to another episode of the Sporting Change Podcast. We’re so happy that you are tuning in today!

This week, we were very lucky to talk about some of the work and brilliance of Dr. Jennifer Fraser. We will hear about how her PhD from the University of Toronto in Comparative Literature acted as some of the fuel behind becoming the author of The Bullied Brain, and her newly released book the Gaslit Brain.

Jennifer is an award-winning educator, an international presenter and an author of five books. She has been called upon for her expertise by many coaching boards, sports associations,  federal sport programs for Indigenous Youth and Canadian parliamentary committees. She also writes a regular series, "The Bullied Brain" for Psychology Today.

For over two decades, she has been researching and writing about how abuse cultures form, what drives them, and how to transform them into healthier, happier, more high-performing ones.

Today,we will be talking about the impact of examining the neuroscience of abuse and how this research has shifted the conversation in shocking, empowering, and ultimately hopeful ways. We’ll talk about her book The Bullied Brain, how abuse and maltreatment affect the brain’s neuroscience, the role of institutional complicity, and why learned helplessness can take hold. But more importantly, we explore how neuroplasticity allows us to reshape our brains and move beyond what she calls the “bullying paradigm.”

I hope you learn as much as we did from Jennifer’s brilliance. Enjoy the show!
