C Derick Varn and I continue our discussion on Bataille. We think about how the trends of history influence and impact the social trends in which schools of thought are thoroughly immersed in. Abundance is not something we think about when we discuss economic theory, yet there is a macro social problem when we reach a state of abundance. This is strangely enough related to the lies we tell children. Why do we encourage children to think they can do anything they set their mind to? It's a lie, there are a number of social and economic factors that restrict our ability to achieve our desires. What should be our relationship toward desire be? How does society move, what are the trends, what impact does media have? Words like weird, strange and odd only have comparative meaning. Thus, the notion of transgression is deeply connected to the culture in which that transgressive act takes place. In this episode we explore the work of Bataille in a broader context and ask is it ok to masturbate in front of your dead mother while your pregnant wife sleeps in an adjacent room?
